Amsterdam Climate

Although Amsterdam’s climate is generally mild, it is also notable for its ability to change, often within little time frame. Amsterdam experiences same weather patterns as those usually associated with Seattle, Ireland or Southern England. Mornings in Amsterdam might start foggy, by midday the sun will prevail; weather might take a turn towards hotter temperatures and become quite cooler by night. It’s not unusual for occasional light showers to intercept periods typified by sunny blue skies, or thunderstorms to break the frequent hot spells.

These weather extremes can be experienced throughout Netherlands, especially during summer when patterns can vary from extended heat waves to days of grey skies and seemingly continuous rain showers.

As a general rule, summer is a rather fine period, with a pleasantly warm disposition. Although during the day t-shirts and short sleeves are sufficient, by night time temperatures cool considerably so a light jacket is advisable. Another interesting feature of Amsterdam weather is that from mid-spring to mid-fall it stays light outside until 10:00 or 10:30 PM. The months between December and March are the coldest in Amsterdam, although winters tend to be mild with considerably less snow than yesteryears.
