Amsterdam weather is normally mild and damp; however it can be variable due to the occasional temperature extremes. The climate is characterized as maritime, although it sometimes carries features of a continental climate, as there sometimes are abrupt weather changes. Due to the fact that Amsterdam is a flat country, stormy winds can enter from all directions, and bring unpredictable changes to the weather such as clearing cloudy skies, or bringing heavy showers.
The average temperature range is 16 C and the average humidity ranges from 67% in May/June to 88% in December.
Summers are usually warm, with some interventions of cold and rainy days, and thus, excessive heat is rare. The highest monthly average temperature is 22 C, during July and August. The coldest Amsterdam weather occurs from December to March, when occasional frost takes place, however snow hardly ever occurs. The lowest average temperature in January and February is -1 C. The winters can be cold, windy and wet.

Rainfall occurs throughout the year, and the driest period is during March, when just 44 mm of rain falls over 16 days. The wettest period is usually in August as it receives approximately 87 mm of rain.
The average sunlight hours range between 1.3 hours per day in winter and 7.4 in summer. Furthermore, Amsterdam enjoys 1568 hours of sunlight per annum.
